When it comes to navigating on the water, there are a lot of fancy instruments out there that can assist you.  But in the end, nothing compares to the reliability of an old fashioned marine compass.

Before there were compasses, sailors used the stars to navigate, but once the compass was invented, it was used for centuries paired with sea charts.  Most boat owners carry GPS units nowadays, but should technology fail for whatever reason, a marine compass offers unrivaled reliability.

Though most of the time we tend to be in view of land, if you’re not or adverse weather conditions prevent you from viewing it, a compass can get you back safely.  It’s important to check your coordinates and have a rough idea as to your location at all times, that way, you can find your way back to land just by knowing which direction is north.

    Unneeded Camping Supplies

When it comes to camping, there are a lot of accessories marketed as useful but are ultimately unneeded.  For example, you’ll tend to find cast iron fire pits amongst camping accessories, but the fact is most recreational campsites have fire pits installed, and provided you contain the fire properly, it’s safe to have a fire even if there isn’t an embedded fire pit.  It’s also common for manufacturers of camping accessories to market multi-tools in excess.

While a good multi-tool is nice to have, how likely is it that you’ll use that corkscrew attachment outdoors?  Choose a multi-tool with a blade, a screwdriver (to repair camping equipment), and perhaps a can and bottle opener; that’s really all you need.  Cooking accessories for camping are another over-marketed product, you need a skillet if your meals require more than that you’re probably not really camping!

You should always be prepared outdoors, but remember that you shouldn’t take an excess of equipment as well.  Camping should be fun, and it’s no fun if you have to spend hours unpacking and setting up, and the same when you leave.

    Equipment for All Weather Conditions

When hunting, fishing, or camping in the great outdoors, it’s important to be prepared for adverse weather conditions.  It’s important to bring rain gear when you’re outdoors because nothing ruins an outing like wet clothes.  It’s also important to bring extra dry clothes in case you do get wet.

Hypothermia is a real danger outdoors and can come on unexpectedly.  You should also ensure that your delicate equipment is waterproof or water-resistant.  If you carry a GPS unit, ensure that it is waterproof or water-resistant.  In addition, waterproof binoculars are a must when traveling outdoors.

Taking these precautions will allow you to stay safe when venturing outdoors, and you can rest assured knowing that you will be prepared to combat the dangers of the wilderness.
